The Photo above is of some of the very first M151's on the Ford factory
line in about 1960. Much of the design and engineering  was many years
ahead of its time. Four wheel independant suspension with coil springs,
light weight unibody construction and a  quick to replace in the field
power pack  were a big change from Jeeps of the past.
The Mutt motorpool website has been built and updated to celebrate this
wonderful work of American engineering. The M151 series of tactical
trucks has become  very popular to collect , restore and show. Also for
some this vehicle  has value as a fine off road exploring machine.
Many restorers are focused on " correctness" in their restorations and
future  historians will be glad that there where examples of the variations
of the versatile MUTT preserved in all the details of  their service.
For those who enjoy upgrading and modernizing the fine engineering of
the MUTT, this website offers some examples of modifications that are
meant to enhance  performance on and off road, without harming the
vehicles original design.
I like nothing better than seeing a perfectly restored and preserved
historic Mutt, but it has been pointed out by several folks to me that in
service, they were constantly modified at the unit level for the mission at
hand or for the comfort and safety of those who  operated in them. My
personal opinion is, that in doing  modifications and performance upgrades
to make the M151 a safer, better performing vehicle , I'm am honoring the
spirit of the designed  multi-function use of this great vehicle..
