I was looking at the photos of the DRMO,brought back some sad
memories.I was in a NG unit at a training base in Ma.I was a
range saftey/control NCO. We were 1 of the last units to have
MUTTS in the state. We used them to go into the IMPACT AREA
on a daily basis. We had to make sure no KIDS+dirtbikes were
down range.They fired 155mm,4.2 mtrs,81mm mtrs,105mm
etc.Lots of ordance laying around. We used them to move about the
craters, impacts and shot up hard targets ( old m48:s etc.),and we
did not get hazzardus duty pay. Many many times we would have to
leed the fire dept. in with their brush breaker trucks to put out fires
caused by HE rds.It was a real trip when the 40mm mtr rounds
would cook off. They would run for cover and I would laugh my ass
off, never bothered me! Any way they were the BEST vehicle for
the job, manuverable gig time to get by the KABOOMS.We had to
turn them in 1991,92 for those SB chevy blazers-fullsize.What a
piece of crap! The first week we lost 7 to transmission
problems. They just could not do the job,and move around like the
mutts.Bad era on the armys part. The $$$$$$ to fix those cut v"s
was rediculus only to break again or to get stuck- that was real
fun.Like walking in a mine field, YAHOOO! So we had to bring our
a2"s to FT. DEVENS to turn in.At the site I almost got sick.ALL
these a2"s sitting there waiting their turn to get crushed by a M88
VTR. Tank retreeval vehicle. They could not keep up with the 1/4
qrt. process so they just ran them over, drive train and all-tires you
name it.Well what a shame to see that,hundreds of them-gonzo. I'm
glad I got mine before this happened to them.
REBUILDING MUTTS AT U-TAPAO AIR BASE
Our line supervisor traded our labor to dig up the palm
trees to a Thai Navy
officer for two M151 Mutt "jeeps" from the bone yard.
I know that Ford build
the Mutts and that they aren't really, official Jeeps, but
the term "jeep"
is applied generically here.
So there they sat, on the edge of the ramp, in front of
our new building on
the Navy Ramp. Here was a job we could have fun at.
Taking the good parts
from one jeep and putting them on the best jeep of the
two. For a couple of
hours we worked.
"I got the carb off. Joe, put it on your jeep."
Joe says, "Well I just pulled the generator off this one
to put on your
jeep."
I say, "But this one is the best."
"No this one is better because the body isn't rusted
thru."
We argued for a while and then we had to work on one
of the planes (C-47).
Some of us got pissed that we couldn't play with the
jeeps anymore. Well,
what the hell do they want us to do? Fix airplanes, build
buildings or work
on jeeps? Answer - all three, and at the same time.
Hurry up. There's a war
on, don't you know?
Somehow the jeeps got recalled. Don't know if the palm
trees died and the
Thai Navy officer took back the "jeeps", or if the Air
Police got wind of
it, or just what went wrong. One of the biggest fuck ups
of our line
supervisor, the bastard.
