151 "MUTT" AIR CLEANER MODIFICATIONS
If you’re a purist and have a show vehicle, you might not want to do this modification
Owners and drivers of Mutt's all know that the MUTT is sluggish and seems under powered. My intent was to increase power
without subjecting the vehicle to radical surgery. With this in mind I set out to make the MUTT more a performer both on the
street as well as off-road, without an engine swap as many people said was necessary. Of the four vehicles that I have installed
these filters on, all of the owners have expressed and appreciation for the extra power.
Here are several reasons why you may want to install this filter.
A) Unrestricted air flow
B) More filtering capacity, just by the nature of the filter it has more filtering capacity, not only that
but it's made for a 5 liter V-8 Ford explorer.
C) Increase in horsepower.
D) One Million mile or ten year warranty.
E) It's washable and reusable.
More information can be obtained about this type of filter directly from the K&N web site at www.knfilters.com.
To install the worlds best reusable air filter, while flowing an average of 50% more air compared to the average air filter, follow
the instructions below.
Tools required:
1/4" Variable speed drill
#1 Phillips screw driver
#43 Drill bit
#33 Drill bit
Parts required:
K&N Air filter (pre-oiled) part # E-996 ( approx. $50.00)
6@ Sheetmetal screws ( same size as the data plate mounting screws, on my mutt that is)
Procedures:
1. Remove the top section only of the original air cleaner assembly. ( be sure to disconnect the
lines and hoses, they will be used in their original positions)
2. Lay the top section on a table and remove the wire mesh (2) and horsehair looking filter from
it. "You'll have to bend the wire mesh to get it out".
3. Remove one rubber gasket from the K&N filter metal mounting flange. ( the cone side gasket)
4. Place the K&N filter on top of the top section of the old air cleaner (cone facing up) as the
top section lies on it's top on the table. The remaining rubber gasket on the K&N filter mounting
ring will be between the K&N filter and the top section. This will seal the K&N filter to the top,
preventing dirt from being drawn into the engine.
5. Layout for the sheet metal screws at the outer edge of the metal mounting ring of the K&N
filter. Approx. every 7th pleat of the K&N filter. You may want to put two screws close together
at the start to create a reference point for all future installation of the K&N filter after washing.
6. Carefully drill thru both the K&N metal ring and the top section lip at the same time with the
#43 drill bit. (The top section lip originally held the wire mesh and horsehair in place).
7. After all six holes are completed in both sections, re-drill only the K&N metal ring
With the #33 drill bit. This will allow the screws to penetrate the metal ring and not distort it while
also mounting it securely to the top section.

8. With the #1 Phillips screw driver, install the K&N filter with the sheet metal screws.
9. Remove the oil bath air cleaner cartridge and old oil. (please dispose of the old oil properly).
10. Re-install the completed top section in the original position.
11. Enjoy a better breathing engine and HAPPY MOTORING.
