K6ERO Portable Radio
Pedestrian mobile and portable antennas
To the right is a photo of the pedestrian mobile
whip antenna I call the Bushwhacker. It consists
of one commercial Buddipole 22" aluminum arm ,
the black CBP coil and is topped by a 36"
military tape whip.
This antenna , when mounted to a backpack
radio via military  spring mount or goosneck is
about 6' tall.
I run the coil tap up and down the coil to find the
highest noise , tap it at that point and then let the
auto tuner in what ever manpack I am using do
the rest of the job of matching . This lets me
walk and play radio on trails that can not be
navigated with my 9' miltary whip.
When the tape whip top encounters a tree limb it
flops over and then pops right back up.
The Military tape whips have a 5/16 " stud so
and adapter muct be made for use with the 3/8 X
24 Buddipole hardware. The tape whips can be
found on ebay and some surplus dealers and are
not expensive. With one coil tap setting and an
11' counterpoise, any of the tuners I use match
this antenna well on 17M and 20M.
With a small investment in a surplus
tape whip and building an adapter,
this makes one more very useable
variation of the buddistick vertical.
I'm sure this short loaded whip has
negative gain, but none the less,
it makes good contacts, and lets me
play radio in some very rugged
woods.
More fun with pedestrian mobile
radio!
Buddistick BushWhacker II
For a bit more efficient coil loaded 8'
pedestrian mobile whip, I took an new
W3FF 64" shock cord whip , removed the
top section and milled down the aluminum
base of a 29" tape whip that was part of the
PRC-132 military pack radio antenna
system to fit. When turned down to the right
diameter, this fit very nicely into the
beautiful brass fitting of the buddiwhip. This
made the two shockcord sections and one
tape whip section 71". With Buddipole 22"
arm and coil thais made that whole antenna
98" tall , with the top 29" able to flex and
bounce back when hitting obstructions,
Tapped for highest noise on 17M or 20M
this set up is very close to a  match .This
lets the high Q buddipole coil do most of
the work instead of the inductance
introduced by the autocoupler in the
PRC-104B. Also being centerloaded it
puts more current up higher in the
antenna , with  less loss in the autotuner
and more signal out!
Big Bushwhacker for 60M and 80M
Knowing that I love to experiment, Budd
W3FF was kind enough to let try out a
prototype High Q BIG 60M/80M Buddipole
coil. Quite a bit bigger than the standard
Buddipole coils with a Q of 400. First try for
Pedestrian portable with the new coil, I used a
22" buddipole arm the BIG coil, a second 22"
arm topped by my tape whip topped shock
cord whip. Total height 10'. Tapped about
halfway down for highest noise, 32'
counterpoise. The auto coupler in the
PRC-104B took less than a second to match,
so it was close to resonant on 5371.50   I called
CQ and got around table going with two
stations in AL , two stations in SC and a
station in GA. All stations I could hear I could
work Q5 with 20 Watts.
