M151 MUTT LOCKERS
DISCRIPTION
These photographs illustrate to differences between the stock locking unit for a Suzuki as supplied by Powertrax and a modified
unit to fit the 151 Mutt differential. There is no machining required to the stock Mutt differential, unless you happen to have one of
the few I have come across doing these lockers that require a slight amount of grinding for clearance. This can be done with a
hand held porting grinder.
The coupler shown on the left of the photograph is the stock coupler. The one on the right has been modified. The modifications
include removal of the axle spline hub (A), reducing the overall thickness of the entire coupler (B), and changing the angle of the
outside of the coupler (C). These operations are necessary to make the locker fit the Mutt differential.
This next photograph illustrates the new parts required to install a Powertrax Lockright automatic positive-locking differential
from a Suzuki into a 151 Mutt differential without machining the Mutt differential. (A) Are the modified couplers as illustrated in the
first two pictures that attach to the new axles, (B) Are the new axles to replace the original axles of the Mutt, (C) is a modified
spider to drive the couplers, (D) Are the new couplers as supplied by Powertrax.
This next photograph illustrates 1/2 of the Powertrax automatic positive-locking unit installed in the Mutt ring gear carrier. All
that's left to complete is the installation of the insertion of the modified spider, a couple of springs and alignment pins, and the
other 1/2 of the locker, and bolt the unit back together, and install as per the TM.
This locking unit will automatically unlock when cornering on a hard surface. It does make a small clicking sound when
cornering on pavement, but it is not very audible unless you're really listening for it. At times when cornering, while backing-off
the gas you will notice a slight hesitation before the locker regains it sense of what is happening. All I do is keep a slight amount
of throttle to prevent it from happening.
